A walk through Spiti Valley (Himachal Pradesh)

Separated from the fertile Lahaul by the glaring Kunzum Pass (4551m), the Trans Himalayan region of Spiti is another extension of Tibet marooned in India. It’s just a better, more vibrant, less crowded and more returning version of Laddakh. The scattered villages in the desert moonscape arrive like mirages while the colorful turquoise grey ribbon of Spti valley is your constant companion all throughout (mostly at a lower altitude than you)

“All the birds have flown up and gone,

A lonely cloud floats leisurely by.

We never tire of looking at each other,

Only the mountain and I”

-Li Po

Why the mysticism enhances in winters?

“Spiti is the scene of a savage grandeur”

-Andrew Wilson

Spiti in winters is a world within a world. With an average elevation of 13,000 ft above the mean sea level, it’s a stark high altitude alpine land. The vastness of the cold desert strips us to bare minimum both emotionally and spiritually. It’s the ultimate detox required to cleanse our mental and psychological baggage we have gathered over due to our everyday mundane lives.

The terrain in winters just feels like a mini Alaska, but just geographically closer to us. Let’s explore the hidden mountain villages, their cultures, ethnicities and customs which are quite contrasting to our routines. Let’s create an imprint on our minds and hearts by trotting through the vastness in extreme cold and carry back warm soulful memories of the magically pristine place which warms and comforts us even in the times to come. Let’s experience a slow transformation of landscape from the lush green hills of Kinnaur to barren, yet immensely beautiful rugged Spiti terrain and then again the comforting cedars of Rampur which we leave you mesmerized.

This is a memory to be “kept in the pocket of your ripped jeans!!
